Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy of the Federation starship USS Enterprise once met a pair of scantily-clad women in a cabaret chorus line on Rigel II. In 2267, the two women were recreated from Dr. McCoy's imagination on the Shore Leave Planet in the Omicron Delta region. (TOS: "Shore Leave")

In 2293, the location of Rigel in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on the Federation star chart The Explored Galaxy. This chart was first seen on aboard the starship USS Enterprise-A. In the 2360s, the chart was seen again at Starfleet Headquarters on Earth, aboard the USS Enterprise-D, in a courtroom in the Starfleet outpost Starbase 173, and in a classroom on the space station Deep Space 9. In 2367, the location of Rigel was depicted on a tactical situation monitor in Captain Benjamin Maxwell's ready room on the USS Phoenix. In an alternate 2366, this same monitor illustrated the Federation and Klingon fleet deployments in the Federation-Klingon War. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise" display graphic)

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (pgs. 52, 59, "United Federation of Planets I"), Rigel II, also known as Beta Rigel II was a M-class planet. The planet was a member planet of both the United Rigel Colonies and the United Federation of Planets. Rigel IV was admitted, along with the United Rigel Colonies, to the Federation in 2202.
