Romulan ranks

The Romulan Fleet ranks are descended from the ancient Vulcan ranking system which was also used by the Vulcan military until the mid-22nd century. It bears some resemblance to various Earth ranking systems. The Tal Shiar use a different ranking system, although they are used interchangeably with the Fleet ranks.

Admiral is approximately equivalent to Starfleet Admiral. The Tal Shiar equivalent is General.

The rank of Subcommander has no Starfleet equivalent, but it is in between a Starfleet Commander and a Starfleet Captain. The Tal Shiar equivalent is Major.

Centurion

Centurion is approximately equivalent to Starfleet Lieutenant Commander.

Lieutenant is approximately equal to a Starfleet lieutenant.

No Romulan Lieutenant has ever been seen or mentioned on Star Trek, although the existence of a Sublieutenant seems to imply it.

Sublieutenant

Sublieutenant is approximately equivalent to Starfleet Lieutenant junior grade.

• Sublieutenant Setal

Uhlan

Uhlan is approximately equal to a Starfleet Crewman. This rank was held by Neral when he first joined the Romulan military. In 2368, as proconsul, he stated that he never liked titles since being a "lowly uhlan in the Romulan Guard." (TNG: "Unification, Part II") It is unknown whether Uhlan is a ground forces (infantry) or fleet (navy) rank.
