As the film's concept designer, Church was the one primarily working on the updated design for the USS Enterprise. [1] He worked on Star Trek from April 2007 through January 2008. [2]

From June 1998 through April 2005 Church was Senior Art Director of Industrial Light & Magic. While there, he supervised concept designs for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and did creature designs for the remake of War of the Worlds. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he did design work on the new Transformers movie (which, like Star Trek, was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci). He also did concept art for the film Outlander, starring Ron Perlman.
Star Trek will mark the second time Church has worked with fellow concept artist James Clyne. The two previously worked together on James Cameron's upcoming film, Avatar, which also stars Zoë Saldana and is set for release in 2009.
