Sam in Enterprise gymnasium (2266)

Sam was an Enterprise crewmember who was exercising in the gymnasium aboard that vessel in 2266. He was "disposed" of by young Charles Evans, a boy who commanded the tremendous powers of the Thasians. He was presumably restored by the Thasians when they intervened in the boy's torment of the Enterprise crew. (TOS: "Charlie X")

Background

This uncredited role was played by regular series extra Robert Herron, although reference books based on the Star Trek Concordance lists the actor playing Sam as Beau Vandenecker, who died in May 2007. The character was only referred to in the script and episode as "Sam."

The novelization "Charlie's Law" by James Blish (released by Bantam Books), he was referred to as Sam Ellis, an officer, who was part of McCoy's medical staff. This information is not canon since it comes from a source outside the series creative staff. In the novelization, Sam appeared back on the bridge when the Thasians restored him, next to Janice Rand.
