Sargon crew

The crew of the Enterprise meet Sargon

Sargon was a noncorporeal being, among the last of a race of highly advanced humanoids who had evolved to a point where their mental powers had become almost god-like. Because of a cataclysmic war about 500,000 years ago, Sargon and a few chosen survivors transferred their consciousness into a spherical storage device. Apparently, they were not true non-corporeal beings in that they required a receptacle to 'house' their consciousness. Sargon and the other survivors, took refuge in an impenetrable vault deep underground because the war had destroyed the planet's atmosphere.

By 2268, Sargon, his wife Thalassa, and a representative of the opposing faction from the war, Henoch, were the only survivors. The other survivors had long since fled their receptacles. That year, Sargon used his powers to summon the USS Enterprise to the planet. It was his hope that, one day, descendants of the colonies that they had scattered throughout the galaxy would one day venture into space. Sargon's request was that three crewmembers would temporarily relinquish their bodies to them so that they may construct android bodies as replacements. The one drawback was that the presence of such powerful consciousnesses in Human bodies accelerated the metabolism to dangerously high levels. Regular doses of metabolic drugs and close monitoring was required to enable the transfer to succeed. By mutual agreement of the Enterprise command crew, Sargon occupied the body of Captain James T. Kirk, while Thalassa occupied Ann Mulhall and Henoch took over Spock. While the bodies were occupied, the consciousnesses of the Enterprise crew were transferred to the aforementioned receptacles; their minds were too weak to interact with the outside world from there.

Unfortunately, Henoch attempted to kill Sargon and keep his new body since Vulcan physiology was more able to adapt to the increased metabolism. Sargon deceived Henoch by fleeing Kirk's body and inhabiting the Enterprise. After Henoch was defeated and killed, Sargon and Thalassa realized that they did not have the control and discipline to use their mental powers in the physical realm and so they left the Enterprise to roam other dimensions of existence, which they labeled as 'oblivion'. (TOS: "Return to Tomorrow")

Greg Cox's novel Q-Strike from the Star Trek: The Next Generation - Q Continuum series suggests that the creature known as (*), aka the Beta XII-A Entity, was the cause of the war among Sargon's people which destroyed the planet's atmosphere.
