A scanner probe was a type of basic probe that was used by Starfleet ships in the late-24th century.
In 2365, the USS Enterprise-D launched a scanner probe to study the interior of a hole in space, created by Nagilum. After the probe vanished at the boundary of the phenomenon, a class-1 probe with a full sensor platform was launched. The latter probe was enveloped even faster. (TNG: "Where Silence Has Lease")
The same probe model was used to represent both the scanner probe, and the class-1 probe in "Where Silence Has Lease" and a class 3 probe in TNG: "The Enemy".
