A shakedown cruise is an operation where a new starship tests its systems. The USS Defiant's strong engines almost tore the ship apart during its shakedown cruise.

Among the ships that have had them are the USS Excelsior, USS Enterprise-B and the USS Defiant. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; Star Trek Generations; DS9: "The Search, Part I")
