Shenara was the daughter of the Klingon emperor Reclaw of the Second Dynasty, who was put to death after her father was overthrown. At the beginning of the Third Dynasty, a concubine named Karana was given Shenara's name and title.

Sirella claimed that her 23rd maternal grandmother was Shenara, though she was actually Karana. (DS9: "You Are Cordially Invited")

According to the episode script, the new "Shenara" later married Keltar, son of Torva, in the Year of Kahless 152.
