A painting by Numazawa in Sisko's quarters

Shigemi Numazawa (born 30 April 1958; age 65) is a Japanese photographer and painter of astronomical themes. He is currently the president of the Japan Planetarium Laboratory, Inc. He lives in Niigata, Japan and was educated at the Tokyo Design Academy.

In 1993, paintings by Numazawa were custom printed for Paramount Pictures to be used as set dressing for the new series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His paintings were seen in the quarters of Benjamin Sisko, Miles O'Brien, and Julian Bashir, and in the classroom on Deep Space 9.

The artist for these paintings was identified in the ScreenUsed catalog. In July 2013, seven paintings by this artist were auctioned at a live on-line auction hosted by ScreenUsed. Lot numbers were #249, #250, #258, #259, #312, #313, and #323. [1]; [2]; [3]; [4]; [5]; [6]; [7]

The main body asteroid 1989 AX1 was renamed 5121 Numazawa in his honor. [8]
