Doctor Sigmund Freud was a highly noted Human psychologist and neurologist in the 19th and 20th century. Some of his writings included Totem and Taboo, Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex, The Interpretation of Dreams, and The Problem of Anxiety. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye"; DIS: "Su'Kal") According to Deanna Troi, Freud once said, "dreams are the royal road to the knowledge of the mind." (TNG: "Phantasms")

The pages seen in the episode were from the mystery novel, Dangerous Ground, by author Frances Sil Wickware. This novel was published in 1946. Information on Sigmund Freud was from page 37.

He once was on the same car as Gertrude Stein on the Orient Express, so they had dinner together every evening. (TNG: "Emergence")

Data began visiting a holographic version of Freud in the holodeck for a psychoanalysis in 2370, after having nightmares about workmen ripping up the USS Enterprise-D and attacking him. After a session with Freud, Data did not feel he had been helped and sought counseling from Troi. She gave him a different analysis and said, "next time see me before you see Sigmund." Troi also told Data that even Freud did not interpret everything, as "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Later, Freud was seen in Data's dream as symbolic representation of his unconscious mind. Freud used a antique telephone to speak with Data and later Captain Picard in order to warn them of the dangers surrounding him. Freud was then "murdered" by one of the workmen. (TNG: "Phantasms")

In 2374, Captain Janeway told Tuvok that Freud had considered Leonardo da Vinci to have had a problem with his mother. (VOY: "Concerning Flight")

One of Freud's contributions to the field of psychology was the concept of projection. Sylvia Tilly referred to this concept in discussions with Osyraa, attributing it to Freud and suggesting that Osyraa's attempts to undermine Tilly's self-esteem were merely projection. (DIS: "Su'Kal")

The hologram of Freud in "Phantasms" was played by actor Bernard Kates.
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 286), the birth and death years of Sigmund Freud were 1856 and 1939, respectively. He was identified as a founder of psychoanalysis.
