White church stained glass, left

Sikhism represented by a khanda (lower-right) on New Eden

A Sikh (pronounced "Sick-h") was a follower of the Earth religion known as Sikhism. Sikhism could be symbolized by a khanda.

After the red angel transported a group of Humans in the East Fork Presbyterian Church from the bombings of World War III in 2053 to the distant planet Terralysium, the "New Eden" settlers "cobbled" together diverse faiths – including Sikhism. A khanda representing Sikhism was a component of the stained glass windows in the White Church. (DIS: "New Eden")

Khan art

Khan, identified as a Sikh

Upon first viewing Khan Noonien Singh in 2267, USS Enterprise historian Lieutenant Marla McGivers visually identified him as being "from the northern India area", and further indicated that he was "probably a Sikh," a people whom she described as having been "the most fantastic warriors." (TOS: "Space Seed")

While McGivers apparently had her own interests in mind throughout the episode, as she was fully aware who Khan was long before Kirk, and given her background, there was clearly no reason how or why she would have identified Khan by a religion, based on appearance alone. Her lines to that effect was chastised in the 13 December 1966 review of the script by de Forest Research. There, it was stated that "a "Sikh" is a member of the Sikh religion, not a racial type, any more than a Roman Catholic is a racial type. They are distinguishable physically only because one of the tenets of their religion is that men do not shave or cut their hair." Despite de Forest's attempt to have the writers correct the error, the term ultimately remained.
