A skimmer was a type of small vehicle capable of, among other things, sub-orbital flight. At least some skimmers had hatches. (DS9: "The Darkness and the Light")

While teaching languages in a Brazilian university, Hoshi Sato once accompanied two other teachers on a hydro-skimmer to a small tributary of the Amazon River. (ENT: "Fight or Flight")

The Cardassians used skimmers to transport ground forces during the Occupation of Bajor. (DS9: "The Darkness and the Light")
