Soliton wave

The Soliton wave

The soliton wave project was an experimental type of propulsion first developed by Dr. Ja'Dar in the late-24th century. In theory, the wave would allow for the achievement of warp speed without the use of warp drive.

The initial test of the soliton wave was staged at Bilana III where forty-three field coils on the planet's surface served to initiate the wave and direct it toward its destination. A ship in the path of the wave would be enveloped and carried along to the destination. At the destination another station would generate a dispersal field to end the wave's progression and bring the ship out of warp.

The Enterprise-D was present at the first test of the soliton wave method. Initially, the test went to plan with the test ship being taken to super-light speed by the wave, registering enormous efficiency in the process. But the test ultimately failed when the wave accelerated and grew out of control, destroying the test vessel and threatening the colony on Lemma II that had been its destination. The Enterprise-D managed to disperse the wave by flying through and outpacing the wave, then detonating several photon torpedoes in its path. (TNG: "New Ground")
