Star Trek: The Compendium is a Blu-ray Disc collection, containing re-releases of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. Released in North America in September 2014, the collection gathers together all of the special edition material for both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, previously broken up between various exclusive editions, as well as new material. It also includes UltraViolet digital copies of the films. Star Trek Into Darkness is featured in its IMAX form, with selected scenes in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. No releases of the set were planned outside of North America.

The original release packaging was a fold-out embossed cardboard Digipak, whereas the reissue, released in 2016 the occasion of Star Trek's 50th anniversary, came in a Viva Elite case only.

The release has seen a reissue on 14 June 2016, complete with the redeemable UltraViolet and iTunes codes for streaming, which had already been included in the 2014 release.

The release was only secured after discussions between The Digital Bits' Bill Hunt and Paramount Home Entertainment, following extensive and intense criticism (aka the second "VAM controversy") of the division's approach (and that of their production/distribution partner Bad Robot Music & Video, LLC) in view of the policies involved regarding the distribution of the bonus features produced for the various 2013 Into Darkness Blu-ray and digital format releases as "retailer exclusives". [1]

The release of this collection[1] was announced on 23 June 2014 and Paramount implicitly conceded their "wrongdoings" as well – though having never explicitly admitted to such in public – by also unveiling on 19 August a temporary $5 rebate offer through, among others, Amazon.com for customers who had previously already purchased Star Trek or Into Darkness on Blu-ray. [2] The courtesy though, was extended to US and Canadian residents only. [3]

Pursuant the release of this edition, the iTunes Store – having previously released the PiP (Picture-in-Picture) enhanced audio commentary version for Into Darkness as an exclusive – made all extras on this edition digitally available for the buyers of the 2009 of Star Trek and the 2013 Into Darkness Blu-ray editions, as part of the "iTunes Extras" package, also made available to the buyers of this edition by redeeming the digital code included in the Compendium. [4]

When the collection was officially announced it was listed as a Region A release, though it turned out to actually be region-free, most likely to accommodate overseas customers, as this release has never been officially distributed in those markets. [5] This was reinforced by the fact that an European-style Dutch-language viewer discretion notification, alongside a French one, was included on disc 4.

Well received, the set was in March 2015 nominated for a Home Media Magazine Award in several categories, including that of "Best Boxed Set". [6]

Background information[]

The original 2014 release is one of the few individual Star Trek releases followed by the professional industry site The Numbers and for which domestic (US & Canada) home video format sales are known; The Numbers has reported that by November 2023 domestic sales had been realized of US$956,000, [8] which at an originally suggested retail price of US$27,00 roughly translates into 35.400 copies sold – a relatively mediocre result when considering the upheaval that had led to its release. Nonetheless, it has not prevented the Star Trek franchise from reissuing the 2016 release – not followed by The Numbers – at a lower price-point.

Footnotes[]

  1. Despite the backlash that precipitated this release the next 2016 Blu-ray film release, Star Trek Beyond, continued the trend of retailer exclusive extras. No complete home media version of this film was released until July 2019, when the Star Trek Trilogy: The Kelvin Timeline 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray saw the light of day. This release superseded The Compendium as the most complete commercially avalable home video version of all three alternate reality films.
