The two series actually cross over in two places in this story. In the main story arc, the crew of the Enterprise-D encounter the Doctor as his eleventh incarnation (portrayed by Matt Smith, who was in his third series) alongside his companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams when Riker, Data and Crusher step into a Dixon Hill adventure in a 1940s San Francisco bar just as the TARDIS materializes outside the same bar. A later event and a look into the original Enterprise's log leads to the Doctor remembering an encounter with the crew of the original Enterprise as his fourth incarnation (portrayed by Tom Baker.)
