These "special" models are larger than the standard releases and retail at roughly twice the price. |
The company hoped to release special issues quarterly and has also made them available to retailers. In the future, some models may incorporate moving or separating parts, unlike the fixed-in-position regular releases. |

Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection is a British partwork magazine published by Eaglemoss Collections which is available in a number of countries worldwide.
Each fortnightly issue includes a hand-painted ABS and diecast metal scaled replica of a starship from the Star Trek universe. Notably, the magazine line has produced many starship models that have never been released by any other licensed company.
Ben Robinson, the project's manager, utilizes the original CGI studio models for reference whenever they are available.[1] For starship designs without available 3D models, designers "Mojo" Lebowitz, Rob Bonchune, and Doug Drexler have supervised the construction of new ones. A number of new 3D models have been built by Meshweaver and cgreactor.[1][2] These models are converted into tooling masters at the factory and renders of them are often used for illustrations in the magazine.
Each accompanying 20-page magazine features articles about the design, filming, and on-screen appearances of the original studio model(s). Detailed "in-universe" information about the vessel's history, crew, weapons, and technology is also included. An online version of each magazine is made available to subscribers.

Extra Issue
In May 2015, the magazine's project manager announced that an extra issue of the magazine will be made available in late autumn 2015. The model will be a Terran Empire deco variant of the standard Enterprise release and will have spiked bussard collectors.

Special Issues
Eaglemoss announced that it had received licensing to release starships from Star Trek's alternate reality as "special issues", alongside unique starships and space stations from Star Trek's prime reality. These "special" models are larger than the standard releases and retail at roughly twice the price.
The company hoped to release special issues quarterly and has also made them available to retailers. In the future, some models may incorporate moving or separating parts, unlike the fixed-in-position regular releases.

Premium Subscription Issues
Additional issues were offered to online subscribers in France, Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg in January 2015 but availability to France was withdrawn in February 2015 without comment.
Four Starfleet shuttlecraft, each measuring about ten centimeters long, will be sent exclusively to "Premium Subscription" members who pay a small additional monthly fee. A small magazine featuring master systems display illustrations newly created by Michael Okuda will accompany each model.
In early 2015, the magazine's project manager indicated that the shuttlecraft issues will be made available worldwide at a later date and stated that the issues would be marketed differently to other countries, possibly as a 4-pack. Alternate deco variants of these models may be offered in other countries.

Gift Premiums
Gift premiums (known here as "loyalty gifts") have been delivered to subscribers. These free items include a binder for holding the magazines, a cast resin USS Enterprise-D dedication plaque, a three-nacelled Future USS Enterprise-D model, and a battery-powered, LED-illuminated plastic Borg Cube.
Japanese subscribers will receive a unique LED-illuminated Borg Cube (approximating the television version of the cube) rather than the regular UK release (which approximated the movie version). This smaller cube may be made available for retail release outside of Japan at a later date. A USS Enterprise Command division key ring will be released by De Agostini as a gift exclusively in Japan, in lieu of a free magazine binder.
Additional magazine binders have been released to retail, and a "limited edition" binder (with alternate artwork) was released in December 2014. The other gift premiums may also be made available for retail sale in the future.
Distribution issues have resulted in some subscribers receiving their gift premiums months later than the scheduled intervals indicated on the magazine's subscription sites. However, the magazine's Terms and Conditions state that the company has the right to modify this schedule unilaterally. Delivery of the UK version of the Borg cube to the US has been delayed due to issues with US Customs.
For American and Canadian subscriptions, the gift premiums are scheduled for much later subscriber milestones than is the case for all other territories.

Starship Dedication Plaques
In March 2015, the magazine's project manager announced that additional starship dedication plaques would be made available to subscribers and through Eaglemoss' online shop. The first plaque is slated for release in the second half of 2015.

Marketing
UK Test Marketing
The first five issues were test-marketed at retail in England's South West region beginning in May 2012. The company's website also began to solicit UK subscriptions at that time. Due to unexpected heavy demand and the resulting production and distribution challenges, new subscriptions were suspended at the end of July 2012.
Upon receipt of the first five issues, subscribers were advised that the magazine had been suspended and that confirmation of forthcoming issues from the publisher was pending. Free gift premiums were not distributed to subscribers. This type of early "test release" is a common practice for partwork publishers.
UK and Ireland marketing
In September 2012, a Facebook page was established for the magazine and Eaglemoss subsequently announced that a full UK roll-out of the line was slated for February 2013. New subscriptions resumed on 17 September 2012 and the company confirmed that gift premiums and more issues were forthcoming.
Initially, the company had plans for seventy issues and displayed a provisional list at the Destination Star Trek London convention in October 2012. Since the provisional list was first shown, a number of possible additional issues have been identified by the line's project manager through social media. Residents of the Republic Of Ireland were added to the UK subscriber base in early 2013.
On 9 January 2013, the company announced that the line would be indefinitely placed on hiatus until a new manufacturer was found, following the closure of their contracted production facility by Chinese authorities. The starship models produced by the first factory were used for the UK and Japanese test releases and some later appeared in large volume online auctions from Hong Kong. Notably, the early Klingon Bird-of-Prey, USS Enterprise-D, and Future USS Enterprise-D models display paintwork that differs markedly from later releases.
In early April 2013, Eaglemoss sent emails to subscribers stating that the magazine was back in production at a new factory and that shipping would resume in August 2013. This re-launch date was confirmed on the line's newly redesigned website in May 2013 and the first issue was re-released on 21 August 2013.
Data Base Factory manages Eaglemoss' subscription and customer services for the UK market. Eaglemoss and Data Base Factory are sister companies and are both subsidiaries of the Financière Aurénis Group. [3] COMAG UK distributes subscription mailings in the UK and Ireland.
When the regular series was launched, Eaglemoss indicated in the FAQ section on their official UK website that the total regular series run would consist of the seventy issues as previously announced, but by late 2014, Eaglemoss increased the number of forthcoming regular issues to a new total of ninety. Many of the magazine's official websites were redesigned and placed into Eaglemoss' main website in December 2014.

International Marketing
All English-language magazines and models distributed outside of the UK are identical to the UK releases. Aside from those countries where it has entered into joint ventures with established outside publishing partners, Eaglemoss has outsourced its customer services, distribution, translation, and editorial services for non-English language areas to Data Base Factory. [4]
Japan
In Japan, the line is published and distributed by De Agostini and carries its imprint on the cover. The first six issues were released in 2012 in a test marketing run, similar to the UK's initial test release. De Agostini's subscriber website went live in April 2014 and the first issue was re-released on 20 May 2014.[5] The magazine's running order differs from the UK's.
US
In May 2013, the company launched their US website and American subscribers began to receive issues in October 2013. At the same time, the line was also made available for retail sale by US retailers affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc..

- ↑ Ben Robinson has previously used live-action production CGI studio models to create illustrations for other licensed Star Trek print publications, in the process becoming, at least where the Star Trek franchise was concerned, a pioneer by doing so. He commissioned Rob Bonchune (and others) to render models for use in the Star Trek Fact Files and its US magazine derivative. Robinson served as project manager, editor, and writer of many issues of those publications (incidentally, published by one of Eaglemoss Collections' two original constituent parts, GE Fabbri), foreshadowing his similar role at the Official Starships Collection.
