Less so with the other shows." As far as the television productions were concerned, he was referring to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and to this end he solicited the input of former Digital Muse Effects Supervisor David Lombardi, who turned out to still have a partial database of digital models, Digital Muse had specifically constructed for Deep Space Nine. Incidentally, years earlier, Lombardi had constructed a digital model of the Enterprise-E as Digital Muse's solicitation model for possible use in 9 and it was his model that became used for the orthographic views in issue 21 of the Collection alongside the beauty views of the later 10 version from Digital Domain. (see: Sovereign-class model)</ref>For starship designs without available digital 3D models (or when production-used models are deemed too low-resolution for practical use), designers "Mojo" Lebowitz, Rob Bonchune, and Doug Drexler have supervised the construction of new ones. Around the turn of the millennium, Giddings was commissioned by Adam Lebowitz to construct CGI models of starship designs that either did not previously exist or were intended to replace those production CGI models deemed unsuitable for print publication. Lebowitz needed these models for illustrations in his planned, but ultimately canceled, Unseen Frontier reference book project in 2000. Having drawn up a list of ships he wanted to tackle earlier, he had Giddings start on these as he himself was still working on Star Trek: Voyager at Foundation Imaging at the time. Giddings had already completed the models on the Centaur-type and the Excelsior-class, among others, when the project fell through. Nevertheless, much of his work was eventually featured in later officially licensed Star Trek print publications including the Fact Files, Star Trek: The Magazine, the Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars, and its 2006 book derivative. Praised by Lebowitz for their high level of detail, his Centaur and Excelsior models were deemed as ready-made for publication in the Official Starships Collection, as was his 2010 spin-off build of the refit-Excelsior-class that he built for Bonchune's USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual reference book. Since the provisional list was first shown, a number of possible additional issues have been identified by the line's project manager through social media. Residents of the Republic Of Ireland were added to the UK subscriber base in early 2013. |

+ | Following CBS' and Eaglemoss' decision to increase the number of regular issues to a revised total of ninety in August 2014, project manager Ben Robinson did not discount the possibility of further issues. In an 8 March 2015 Q&A session on the Official Starships Collection's Twitter page, he wrote, "It's a question of economics, though. If enough people are buying, we'll keep going. We're already doing more ships than anyone ever imagined. Hurrah!".In June 2015, the project manager indicated that any decision to go beyond 90 issues would be made public by Eaglemoss in September 2015. |

Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection is a British partwork magazine published by Eaglemoss Collections which is available in a number of countries worldwide and is authorized and licensed by CBS Consumer Products. [1]
Each fortnightly issue includes a hand-painted ABS and diecast metal scaled replica of a starship from the Star Trek universe. Notably, Eaglemoss has produced a number of starship models that have never been released by any other licensed company.
Ben Robinson, the project's manager, utilizes original CGI studio models for reference whenever they are available.[2] [3]For starship designs without available digital 3D models (or when production-used models are deemed too low-resolution for practical use), designers "Mojo" Lebowitz, Rob Bonchune, and Doug Drexler have supervised the construction of new ones. Some of these models have been created by independent contractors including Meshweaver's Fabio Passaro[4], and Ed Giddings[5]of Cgreactor.
Models are converted into tooling masters at the factory in China and renders of them are often used for illustrations in the magazine. Reference photographs of studio models, production stills, and newly-created orthographic views are also used extensively.
Each accompanying 20-page magazine features articles about the design, filming, and on-screen appearances of the original studio model(s). Detailed "in-universe" information about the vessel's history, crew, weapons, and technology is also included. Interviews were conducted with a number of Star Trek production staff for the magazine. An online version of each issue is made available to subscribers.

Extra Issue
In May 2015, the magazine's project manager announced that an extra issue of the magazine will be made available in late autumn 2015. The model will be a Terran Empire deco variant of the standard USS Enterprise release and will have spiked bussard collectors. This issue will be offered to subscribers and to the general public through the magazine's webshops. It will also be sold through North American shops affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors.

Special Issues
Eaglemoss received licensing to release starships from Star Trek's alternate reality as "special issues", alongside unique starships and space stations from Star Trek's prime reality. These "special" models are larger than the standard releases and retail at roughly twice the price.
The company hoped to release special issues quarterly and has also made them available to retailers. In the future, some models may incorporate moving or separating parts, unlike the fixed-in-position regular releases.

Shuttlecraft Issues
Additional shuttlecraft issues were offered to online subscribers in France, Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg in January 2015 but availability to France was withdrawn in February 2015 without comment.
In Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg, four Starfleet shuttlecraft, each measuring about ten centimeters long, will be sent exclusively to "Premium Subscription" members who pay a small additional monthly fee. A small magazine featuring master systems display illustrations (okudagrams) newly created by Michael Okuda will accompany each model.
In June 2015, the magazine's project manager indicated that the shuttlecraft issues will be marketed directly to UK and US subscribers at a later date. They will also be retailed through the company's webshops. These issues will retail at a slightly higher price than regular issues and will be made available individually and as a 4-pack. The shuttles are expected to reach UK subscribers in October or November 2015. Alternate deco variants of these models may be offered to some markets.

Gift Premiums
Gift premiums (known here as "loyalty gifts") have been delivered to subscribers. These free items include a binder for holding the magazines, a cast resin USS Enterprise-D dedication plaque, a three-nacelled Future USS Enterprise-D model, and a battery-powered, LED-illuminated plastic Borg Cube.
Japanese subscribers will receive a unique LED-illuminated plastic Borg Cube (approximating the television version of the cube) rather than the regular UK release (which approximated the movie version). This smaller cube may be made available for retail release outside of Japan at a later date. A USS Enterprise Command division key ring will be released by De Agostini as a gift exclusively in Japan, in lieu of a free magazine binder.
Additional magazine binders have been released to retail, and a "limited edition" binder (with alternate artwork) was released in December 2014. In June 2015, the UK version of the Borg cube was made available for retail sale to non-subscribers on Eaglemoss' UK website. Other gift premiums may also see retail release in the future.
Distribution issues have resulted in some subscribers receiving their gift premiums months later than the scheduled intervals indicated on the magazine's subscription sites. However, the magazine's Terms and Conditions state that the company has the right to modify this schedule unilaterally. Delivery of the UK version of the Borg cube to the US has been delayed due to issues with US Customs.
For American and Canadian subscriptions, the gift premiums are scheduled for much later subscriber milestones than is the case for all other territories.

Starship Dedication Plaques
In March 2015, the magazine's project manager announced that additional starship dedication plaques will be made available to subscribers and to the general public through Eaglemoss' online shops. The first three plaques are slated for release in the second half of 2015 while the fourth and fifth are scheduled for 2016. An additional (unspecified) plaque may also be released in 2016.

Marketing
UK Test Marketing
The first five issues were test-marketed at retail in England's South West region beginning in May 2012. The company's website also began to solicit UK subscriptions at that time. Due to unexpected heavy demand and the resulting production and distribution challenges, new subscriptions were suspended at the end of July 2012.
Upon receipt of the first five issues, subscribers were advised that the magazine had been suspended and that confirmation of forthcoming issues from the publisher was pending. Free gift premiums were not distributed to subscribers. This type of early "test release" is a common practice for partwork publishers.
UK and Ireland marketing
In September 2012, a Facebook page was established for the magazine and Eaglemoss subsequently announced that a full UK roll-out of the line was slated for February 2013. New subscriptions resumed on 17 September 2012 and the company confirmed that gift premiums and more issues were forthcoming.
At the very inception of the project, a production run of fifty issues was foreseen [19], but by the time the project was gearing up for its regular run, the company had plans for seventy issues and displayed a provisional list at the Destination Star Trek London convention in October 2012. Since the provisional list was first shown, a number of possible additional issues have been identified by the line's project manager through social media. Residents of the Republic Of Ireland were added to the UK subscriber base in early 2013.
On 9 January 2013, the company announced that the line would be indefinitely placed on hiatus until a new manufacturer was found, following the closure of their contracted production facility by Chinese authorities. The starship models produced by the first factory were used for the UK and Japanese test releases and some later appeared in large volume online auctions from Hong Kong. Notably, the early Klingon Bird-of-Prey, USS Enterprise-D, and Future USS Enterprise-D models display paintwork that differs markedly from later releases.
In early April 2013, Eaglemoss sent emails to subscribers stating that the magazine was back in production at a new factory and that shipping would resume in August 2013. This re-launch date was confirmed on the line's newly redesigned website in May 2013 and the first issue was re-released on 21 August 2013.
Following CBS' and Eaglemoss' decision to increase the number of regular issues to a revised total of ninety in August 2014, project manager Ben Robinson did not discount the possibility of further issues. In an 8 March 2015 Q&A session on the Official Starships Collection's Twitter page, he wrote, "It's a question of economics, though. If enough people are buying, we'll keep going. We're already doing more ships than anyone ever imagined. Hurrah!".[6]In June 2015, the project manager indicated that any decision to go beyond 90 issues would be made public by Eaglemoss in September 2015.
Data Base Factory manages Eaglemoss' subscription and customer services for the UK market. Eaglemoss and Data Base Factory are sister companies and are both subsidiaries of the Financière Aurénis Group. [20] COMAG UK distributes subscription mailings in the UK and Ireland.
Many of the magazine's official websites were redesigned and placed into Eaglemoss' main website in December 2014.

International Marketing
English-language magazines distributed outside of the UK are identical to the UK releases. A small number of models with minor painting errors have had these paint issues corrected after the initial production run.
Aside from those countries where it has entered into joint ventures with established outside publishing partners, Eaglemoss has utilized (sister company) Data Base Factory for its customer services, distribution, translation, and editorial services for non-English language areas. [21]
Japan
In Japan, the line is published and distributed by De Agostini and carries its imprint on the cover. The first six issues were released in 2012 in a test marketing run, similar to the UK's initial test release. De Agostini's subscriber website went live in April 2014 and the first issue was re-released on 20 May 2014.[22] Outer packaging and the magazine's running order differ from the UK version.
US
In May 2013, the company launched their US website and American subscribers began to receive issues in October 2013. At the same time, the line was also made available for retail sale by US retailers affiliated with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc..

Special issues are available exclusively at retailers and are not offered to subscribers.
Germany
After a five-issue test marketing run and website launch in early 2014, the magazine fully relaunched in Germany in January 2015. The magazine's running order differs from the UK's. It is distributed by Interabo GmbH.
Australia
Early imported issues began to reach retailers in Australia beginning in December 2013. An Australian subscriber website went live in February 2014. Subscriptions and wide retail availability commenced on 31 March 2014. Bissett Magazines Pty. Ltd. distributes the line.[23][24]

The Rest of the World
On 3 October 2014, Eaglemoss announced that they had acquired licensing for all of Europe and stated that the line would begin to be released in the remaining countries of Europe commencing in 2015. The company also stated that it hoped to release the line in other territories in the future but did not offer specific dates or countries. The magazines list additional details for South African, Malaysian, and Singaporean distribution. In a number of countries, retailers have imported issues of the magazine from the UK for resale.

Footnotes
- ↑ John Van Citters, Vice President of CBS Consumer Products' Product Development, supervises the magazine for CBS and formally announced the expansion of the magazine to 90 issues at The Official Star Trek Convention held in Las Vegas from 31 July to 3 August 2014. [1]
- ↑ Ben Robinson has previously used live-action production CGI studio models to create illustrations for other licensed Star Trek print publications, in the process becoming, at least where the Star Trek franchise was concerned, a pioneer by doing so. He commissioned Rob Bonchune (and others) to render these models for use in the Star Trek Fact Files and its US magazine derivative. Robinson served as project manager, editor, and writer of many issues of those publications (incidentally, published by one of Eaglemoss Collections' two original constituent parts, GE Fabbri), foreshadowing his similar role at the Official Starships Collection.
- ↑ As to the availability of production-used digital models, Robinson has stated, "There is an excellent archive of ships from Voyager and Enterprise. Less so with the other shows." [2] As far as the television productions were concerned, he was referring to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and to this end he solicited the input of former Digital Muse Effects Supervisor David Lombardi, who turned out to still have a partial database of digital models, Digital Muse had specifically constructed for Deep Space Nine. [3] [4] Incidentally, years earlier, Lombardi had constructed a digital model of the Enterprise-E as Digital Muse's solicitation model for possible use in Star Trek: Insurrection and it was his model that became used for the orthographic views in issue 21 of the Collection alongside the beauty views of the later Star Trek Nemesis version from Digital Domain. (see: Sovereign-class model)
- ↑ New or replacement CGI models Passaro provided for the Collection, as identified in social media, include issues 12 [5], 14 [6], 20 [7] and 73 [8]
- ↑ Giddings, through prior associations with Lebowitz, had already made contributions to the Star Trek print franchise. [9] Having drawn up a list of ships he wanted to tackle earlier, he had Giddings start on these as he himself was still working on Star Trek: Voyager at Foundation Imaging at the time. Giddings had already completed the models on the Centaur-type and the Excelsior-class, among others, when the project fell through. [10] Nevertheless, much of his work was eventually featured in later officially licensed Star Trek print publications including the Fact Files, Star Trek: The Magazine, the Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars, and its 2006 book derivative. [11]
New or replacement CGI models Giddings provided for the Collection, as identified in social media, include issues SP1 [12], 8, 40, 42 [13], 46 [14], and 52. - ↑ In conjuncture with the issue run increase from seventy to ninety, Robinson was able to divulge at a later time that former Star Trek Producer Dave Rossi had made the entire starship database of the remastered Original Series available to the publication. [15] In this Robinson really scored a scoop for his project as it constituted the very first time that the remastered Original Series ships, especially those specifically constructed for the production [16], were made available for dissemination to a general public. It has enabled Robinson to already account for several of these in his lineup after issue 50, such as issues 57, 60 and 63, with the run increase enabling him to plan for additional ones. [17] The models were not quite ready-made however, as CBS Digital made use of the Autodesk Maya software for their CGI effects at the time and the models needed a conversion into LightWave 3D, the software package of choice for the vast majority of Star Trek digital modelers. Robinson had Fabio Passaro, among others, assigned to the chore. [18] Ironically, CBS Digital had originally bought the majority of the "hero" ship models from Finnish digital modeler Petri Blomqvist, but had to convert them as he had constructed his models in LightWave. (Sci-fi & fantasy modeller, Vol. 26, p. 48-50) If his models were to be used (such as for the planned Terran Empire Enterprise extra issue), then they need to be reconverted back into LightWave.
