The 2009 DVD theatrical cut widescreen release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan included a series of new special features, and a digitally remastered version of the original theatrical cut. Having made its debut in the May 2009 Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy release, it was also part of the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, concurrently released with the individual title. Extensive restoration was required for this film, director Nicholas Meyer noting that the original negative "was in terrible shape".

The remastering was actually done for the concurrent Blu-ray counterpart release and it was these masters that were downscaled to the SD resolution required for the corresponding DVD release.

Special features[]

Only the newly-produced special features are included on this release, as, ironically, those of the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (The Director's Edition) DVD were only included on its Blu-ray counterpart, excepting the text commentary. This was by no means for technical reasons but entirely intentional; the industry favored the then still relatively new Blu-ray home video format over the DVD, giving it preferential treatment where the special features were concerned in order to entice consumers to make the switch from DVD to the new format. This, incidentally, was not limited to Star Trek alone, but was an industry-wide phenomenon at the time.

Background information[]

  • While the DVD still had the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, its Blu-ray counterpart featured the new, superior Dolby TruHD 7.1 soundtrack.
  • The first printing Region 4 release came packaged within a matching steel slipcase.
  • This particular release is one of the few individual Star Trek releases followed by the professional industry site The Numbers and for which domestic US home video format sales are known; The Numbers has reported that by June 2020 domestic sales had been realized of US$245,580 for both this and its Blu-ray counterpart releases. While this might seem paltry at first sight, it must be realized that Star Trek fans, weary of what they call "double-dipping", prefer to buy such individual titles as part of collection releases such as in this case the Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy and Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection releases, which have realized substantially better domestic sales of US$4.3 and US$15 million respectively in a similar fashion. [1] This release therefore was as such not not so much intended for the Star Trek fan, but rather for the casual, generic consumer.
