Statistical Mechanics is a required course at Starfleet Academy. It studies physical, chemical, and biological systems by examining the various ''states'' in which such systems may be found, how such systems transition between states, and the relationship of these states to the systems' basic intrinsic and extrinsic properties like temperature, mass density, and energy content.

Statistical Mechanics offers a mathematically-rigorous kinematic[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinematic] underpinning to the study of heat, entropy, and work. As applied to atomic and subatomic particles, Statistical Mechanics plays a central role in the design of matter-antimatter reactors and warp drive systems.

Statistical mechanics is an application that combines mathematical and physical theories.

Wesley Crusher helped his friend Joshua Albert with his studies in statistical mechanics at Starfleet Academy. While Joshua's father, Lt Com Albert, thought one of his son's weakness was in mathematics, Wesley explained that that was not the case, and that Joshua was able to understand the subject, however, he had no interest in doing it. (TNG: "The First Duty")
