Statistical Mechanics is a required course at Starfleet Academy. It studies physical, chemical, and biological systems by examining the various states in which such systems may be found, how such systems transition between states, and the relationship of these states to the systems' basic intrinsic and extrinsic properties like temperature, mass density, and energy content.

Statistical Mechanics offers a mathematically-rigorous kinematic[1] underpinning to the study of heat, entropy, and work. As applied to atomic and subatomic particles, Statistical Mechanics plays a central role in the design of matter-antimatter reactors and warp drive systems.
