Sturgeon was a male Human Starfleet enlisted crewmember in the 23rd century. He served in the sciences division aboard the USS Enterprise in 2266 under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, during the historic five-year mission.

That same year, Sturgeon accompanied Captain Kirk and Crewman Green to the surface of planet M-113 to investigate the death of Darnell, a crewman who had died recently. Kirk ordered Sturgeon to locate and collect a sample of the poisonous borgia plant, which was supposedly the cause of Darnell's death. While searching, however, Sturgeon was attacked and killed by a creature which extracted all of the salt from his body as a form of sustenance. (TOS: "The Man Trap")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, he was named for Theodore Sturgeon, writer of the episodes "Shore Leave" and "Amok Time". (citation needededit)
