In military ranks, a subaltern is a generic term for any junior officer below the rank of an infantry captain (which is equivalent to the Starfleet rank of lieutenant).
Subaltern Lorot of the Vulcan High Command was once assimilated by the Borg (VOY:"Infinite Regress").
