Subspace fields can be generated by accelerating plasma through the driver coils of an impulse drive; this improves the propulsive effect. They are also generated by accelerating plasma through the warp coils of a starship's warp drive to achieve faster than light velocities.
A large subspace field was used to assist in moving Deep Space 9 from its orbit around Bajor to the Bajoran Wormhole. (DS9: "Emissary")
