Template:Sidebar character Sybok was the firstborn son of the Vulcan diplomat Sarek and a Vulcan princess. After the death of his mother, Sybok spent much of his early childhood with his half-brother, Spock. His brother was also the son of Sarek, but his mother, Amanda Grayson, was a Human female.

As a young student, Sybok was exceptionally gifted and possessed great intelligence. It was even assumed that one day he would take his place among the great scholars of Vulcan. Sybok, however, was a revolutionary, as the knowledge and experience he sought was forbidden by Vulcan belief. Sybok rejected the idea of pure logic, preferring instead to balance it with emotion of his Vulcan ancestors becoming a V'tosh ka'tur. When he encouraged others to follow him, he was banished from Vulcan, never to return.

During his studies, Sybok received visions given to him by what he believed to be "God", beginning his journey for a place in Vulcan mythology known as Sha Ka Ree. In 2287, Sybok's visions lead him to Nimbus III, where he gathered a group of loyal followers, known as the Galactic Army of Light. By using his telepathic powers to make someone face their deepest pains, Sybok was able to convince others that he was a true visionary. With his growing band of loyal followers, Sybok was easily able to capture Paradise City.

In effort to gain access to a starship, Sybok kidnapped the three representatives of the city – the Romulans' Caithlin Dar, the Klingons' General Korrd, and the Federation's St. John Talbot. These kidnappings eventually lead to a failed rescue attempt by the crew of the Federation starship USS Enterprise-A, instead leading to the hijacking of the vessel. Sybok commandeered the Enterprise to the location where his visions led him, beyond the Great Barrier.

Upon locating Sha Ka Ree, it was revealed that Sybok was led astray by his "God", which was discovered to be a malevolent entity imprisoned on the planet, seeking a starship to gain its freedom. Realizing what he had done, Sybok attempted to save the crew of the Enterprise by sacrificing himself at the altar of his god. (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)

The role of Sybok was written for popular actor Sean Connery; however, this did not come to be and the role was, ultimately, played by Laurence Luckinbill. According to the Star Trek Chronology, Sybok was born in 2224.
Sybok's back story has been considered apocryphal by some sources, including Gene Roddenberry. It was stated in TNG: "Sarek" that Sarek's first wife was from Earth. Clearly, this was intended to be a reference to Amanda and that Sarek was not married to a Vulcan princess. Admittedly, Star Trek V never explicitly says that Sarek ever married the princess, nor was it stated in "Sarek" that Amanda was Sarek's first Human wife, or how many previous wives he had, only that the Vulcan princess was Sybok's mother.
