A Synaptic stimulator is a small, grey gadget, worn behind a person's ear. It is a neural interface that taps into the user's visual cortex and displays various alien vistas. It is unable to show people.
Sometime between 2371 and 2375, the crew of the USS Equinox obtained this device from the Ponea. Since the Equinox was not equipped with a holodeck, this was one of the few forms of entertainment they had. Marla Gilmore introduced the device to Chakotay and Harry Kim of the USS Voyager, while listing the supplies collected by the Equinox.
Captain Rudolph Ransom was wearing the device while his ship exploded from a warp core overload. (VOY: "Equinox, Part I" and "Part II").
