The tactical officer, tactics officer, or tactical aide was an officer stationed at the tactical station and responsible for controlling a starship's weaponry and shields. A comparative term also used in Starfleet, the Romulan military, and the Klingon Defense Force was weapons officer or, to a lesser degree, gunner. (TNG: "Redemption"; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)

On Starfleet vessels, the tactical officer's job was to maintain weapon and shield readiness along with executing firing solutions. These solutions could range from a low intensity phaser beam or to plot a torpedo firing pattern. Security chiefs frequently doubled as tactical officers, though the two roles were not required to be filled by the same person. (TNG: "Pen Pals", "Masks")

Aboard Federation starships in the mid-23rd century, these duties were handled, at least to a large degree, by the helmsman and/or navigator. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")
