Pacifism?
I might be wrong, but if humans are pacifist, why did they fight in the Dominion War, etc.?

- The term "restricted pacifism" has been used for such a position, although it might be better just to say "non-agressive." --Jhawk 23:43, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- Given their history of involvement and relations with not just the Dominion, but also the Klingon, and the Romulan Star, Empires, it might be said that Humans rarely engage in pacifism per se...rather, "active diplomacy," which tends to be aggressive and passive to differing degrees on different occasions. In one of the Star Trek Section 31 novels, a Romulan commander attributed the Federation's expansionism to the Humans, and thereupon likened them to the Borg...considered by many their own mortal enemies. --ChrisK 19:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Starfleet/Human
This could probably better reflect Starfleet's goal then just "exploration" and "the prime directive". Janeway's speech to Ransom in "Equinox" and Picard's speech to Wesley in "The First Duty" come to mind, but I sapose that would be for Starfleet officers, and not nessesarily all humans. But then again, does the Prime Directive even affect civilians? Or is it a Starfleet thing? It's probably a law for civilians, but it's often only cited as "Starfleet General Order 1". - AJHalliwell 06:16, 24 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Much like the difference in murder between military and social courtrooms, "different and yet not different," the Prime Directive probably exists in Federation civilian law just as it does in Starfleet, although termed by some other name...Kirk's "non-interference policy" could be exactly what that is (and if not, hopefully a writer reads this, lol). --ChrisK 17:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- "Angel One" established that the Prime Directive does not apply to civilians. It's a Starfleet General Order, not a low. However, the DS9 episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" established that the Federation Charter contains a provision banning the Federation government from interfering with the internal affairs of a foreign state, which sounds like a PD equivalent for the civilian government. It would, however, appear that neither of these laws apply to civilian non-governmental Federates. -- Sci 12:08 23 DEC 2008 UTC
