Stick in the hand of the captain of the excelsior

What in the hell is that stick that the captain of the excelsior has? - User:Lt Colonel Huljev

  • It appears to be some sort of a Starfleet baton. There are no references to it (or why he has it) in the script, so the rest is speculation. --Alan del Beccio 00:37, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
  • It's a "swagger stick", an accessory that used to be popular with aristocratic officers. It might be a tip of hat to James B. Sikking's role on "Hill Street Blues", where his character emulated Gen. George S. Patton, including his taste for elaborate uniforms. Patton also carried a swagger stick. --Aurelius Kirk 01:51, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
  • You could make a loooooong list of film officers (mostly Brit, I'd guess) who wielded swagger sticks. But ... the one that comes to my mind, and has some resonance for this Capt St(y/i)les is Lt. Col Nicholson (Alec Guinness) in The Bridge On the River Kwai.(Or maybe it was the pompous Col. Saito who carried one....)

I presume that it's been argued and researched and established that this isn't another one of the insufferable Stiles family? When this film came out, and I heard a page for "Captain Stiles, to the briefing room" in the lounge where Kirk and Morrow are arguing, I thought, "Oh %&#*, that bigoted LT from Balance of Terror?! He made CAPTAIN??" Kojiro Vance | Talk 02:39, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
