Need some more indepth information on what a technician is. -- Q 04:49, 20 Mar 2005 (EST)
I removed the following - doesn't seem to have any relevance from either an in-universe or production POV:
- In the old United States army pre-1954, a NCO who had a speciality in a dicipline beyond that of general infantry combat.
Also, found the following as a HTML comment - this might better be placed here, where comments are actually expected:
- needs references to petty officer / specialist grades -- all technicians are petty officers (navy) or specialists (army)

- When a technician was referred to on a starship, he or she was often called technician 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class so as to account for his or her rank. A petty officer 2nd class, for example, who was a transporter technician, would have been, traditionally, referred to as technician second class.
