Tarbolde was an author from the Canopus Planet who, in 1996, wrote "Nightingale Woman," which was widely regarded as one of the most passionate love sonnets written for a period of centuries. Gary Mitchell recited an excerpt of "Nightingale Woman." (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

His brilliance was encouraged by his encounter with Onaya who helped him in his career like she did with John Keats and Tavor Kell. He died young, having his mental energy drained by Onaya. (DS9: "The Muse")

According to the Star Trek Concordance, Tarbolde's first name was "Phineas". This was later adopted by the Star Trek Encyclopedia. The name is also referenced in Far Beyond the Stars.
Tarbolde's work was mentioned in the novel Q-Space, as being among the personal collection of Jean-Luc Picard.
