Teplan blight

A victim of the Teplan blight before and after the quickening.

The Teplan blight was a disease introduced to the Teplans by the Jem'Hadar because of their resistance against the Dominion. The main characteristic of this disease is a series of 'spider-veins' over the skin which turn red during the 'quickening' or terminal stage.

The Blight was treated by Dr. Julian Bashir on his visit to the Teplan homeworld. Unfortunately, he learned too late that the Dominion had anticipated modern medical treatment of the disease; the blight was engineered to accelerate its effect when exposed to electromagnetic fields emanating from scanning devices. As a result, his patients went into agonizing convulsions that prompted them to plead en masse for euthanization by their resident caretaker and that resulted in the death of almost all Bashir's patients.

However, while delivering one dying patient's child, Dr. Bashir inadvertently discovered an in-vitro vaccine that prevented unborn children from contracting the blight. Thus, the population would be able to eliminate the disease in a few generations. (DS9: "The Quickening")

In 2375, the Romulan chairman of the Tal Shiar, Koval, asked Bashir if the virus could be replicated. (DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges")
