"Fortune favors the bold" is a saying attributed to Pliny the Elder by his nephew Pliny the Younger when the elder Pliny attempted to help people on the coastline during the eruption of mount Vesuvius. (Sadly, Pliny died from a fatal asthma attack during his rescue attempt, casting the truth of the maxim in doubt.)
The proverb, in its Latin form, audentes fortuna iuvat, was the motto of Columbia, the second NX-class starship, and was used on that vessel's mission patch. (ENT: "Home", "Affliction")
The saying was also cited by Benjamin Sisko when he launched his assault to recapture Deep Space 9 in early 2374. (DS9: "Favor the Bold")
