"The Fall of the House of Usher" was a 19th century short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

In Dangerous Ground, on the last day of the year, Doctor John Rawley went on a walk after lunch. In his opinion, the day was "dull, dark, and soundless". Poe used these words to describe an afternoon in this short story. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")
