Lateral thrusters were normal thrusters that were on the bottom of a ship. They were used to take the ship out of an atmosphere, add pitch, or elevate the ship. In 2371, Data rerouted the last available power to the lateral thrusters to slow the descent of the USS Enterprise-D. (Star Trek Generations)
