The transporter chief (or transporter operator) is a crewmember stationed in one of the several transporter areas on a starship. On Starfleet vessels, this operator is usually a petty officer, ensign or lieutenant in the operations division. Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien, was the chief in transporter room 3 on the Enterprise-D. (DS9: "Emissary")
In 2371 the USS Voyager lost its transporter chief in the events surrounding it's stranding in the Delta Quadrant, necessitating a replacement. (VOY: "Parallax")
