Each hub could connect to thousands of transwarp conduits with possible endpoints in all four quadrants of the galaxy, giving the Borg an enormous strategic advantage. The structure was supported by a series of interspatial manifolds. These manifolds were protected by force fields, controlled by the Borg Queen herself. Destruction of the massive hub complex could be accomplished by disabling enough interspatial manifolds, but the main problem with this approach was disabling the force fields protecting the manifolds. Even if this was accomplished, multiple detonations would still be needed to detonate at the same time to collapse the manifolds and force a cascade reaction which would take out other interspatial manifolds. When this happened a shock wave would surge through the transwarp conduit in question.

In 2378 there were six known transwarp hubs in the Borg network. One hub was situated in a nebula, Spatial Grid 986, within the Delta Quadrant and was discovered by USS Voyager in 2378. This happened when Voyager detected extremely high neutrino emissions, accompanied by an intermittent graviton flux from the center of the nearby nebula. Believing these were emissions from hundreds of wormholes, which might shorten their journey home to the Alpha Quadrant, they set course for the nebula, only to discover the true nature of the readings: the transwarp hub protected by numerous Borg cubes.

After Voyager left the nebula, they encountered a temporal rift from which a Starfleet shuttle appeared. In this shuttle was Admiral Kathryn Janeway who came from the future to bring Voyager home. With her she brought technology, better armor and transphasic torpedoes, to enhance Voyagers defenses (ignoring the Temporal Prime Directive completely).

With the help of these technologies and Admiral Janeway, who infected the Borg with a neurolytic pathogen disrupting the Borg Queen's control over the interspatial manifold force fields, they were successful in entering transwarp conduit 9, which led to the Alpha Quadrant. After they entered, transphasic torpedoes were fired at the manifolds causing a cascade reaction. Fortunately Voyager managed to stay ahead of the shock wave and entered the Alpha Quadrant where they were greeted by a Starfleet battle-fleet assembled to fight the Borg after detecting a transwarp aperture less than a light year from Earth.

A transwarp hub

A transwarp hub was a structure that connected the Borg Collective's galactic network of transwarp conduits. Connecting to thousands of exit apertures in all four quadrants, the hub allowed the Borg to quickly deploy vessels almost anywhere in the galaxy, giving them a decisive tactical advantage. The galaxy had six such hubs, characterized by extremely high neutrino emissions and intermittent graviton flux. The hubs were supported by interspatial manifolds, whose shielding the Borg Queen regulated from the central nexus.

Borg transwarp network

The Borg transwarp network

In 2378, the crew of USS Voyager discovered a hub in the Delta Quadrant, inside a nebula in grid 986. The nebula contained at least forty-seven Borg cubes. Collaborating with Captain Janeway's counterpart from twenty-six years in the future, who had traveled back in time to change history, the Voyager crew destroyed the hub and, with it, the entire transwarp network. Admiral Janeway had deliberately infected herself with a neurolytic pathogen and allowed the Borg Queen to assimilate her, disrupting the Queen's ability to regulate the shielding around the interspatial manifolds. Having taken the ship into one of the hub's conduits, the Voyager crew then fired transphasic torpedoes, causing a chain reaction that destroyed the entire network. Staying ahead of the resultant shock wave, Voyager exited the aperture less than a light year away from Earth before the conduit collapsed. (VOY: "Endgame")

For "Endgame", the design of a transwarp hub was worked on by Foundation Imaging. "Jarrod Davis worked out that big, huge, evil-looking transwarp hub," reported Foundation's Visual Effects Supervisor, Robert Bonchune. "This is another case where I was really nervous about the effect beforehand [....] But it turned out really great. Paramount asked for only a minor change; they felt the shot we had done initially was a little too white, so we subdued that a little bit and made it darker." (Star Trek Monthly issue 82, p. 18)
According to the Star Trek Online video game, the Federation established the first links of its own system of transwarp conduits in 2399, and by 2409, would link the Sol system to key starbases in and around Federation territory, including Deep Space 9, Deep Space Station K-7, and Starbase 39-Sierra. The Federation network does not appear to employ a visible hub, though a Federation-built transwarp aperture complex located near Risa leads to Borg-controlled territory. The Klingon Empire also maintains or at least uses a transwarp network, though it is unknown when it was established relative to the Federation version.
