Tricobalt was a type of explosive that could be used as anything between a small anti-personnel explosive to weapons of mass destruction to destroy large installations such as space stations. The thermokinetic explosion yield of tricobalt was measured in tons or by the amount of subspace distortion they produced, in cochranes. (DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations"; ENT: "Minefield"; VOY: "The Voyager Conspiracy")

According to the Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual (p. 19), the element tricobalt, symbol Tr, atomic weight 332, atomic number 129, was discovered by the Federation on Janus VI in 2192.
In ultimately unused dialogue from the final draft script of "Minefield", Malcolm Reed told Jonathan Archer, "Tricobalt puts out a lot of heat... at least five thousand degrees."

History[]

In the 22nd century, Romulans utilized tricobalt explosives in their cloaked mines. (ENT: "Minefield") In the mirror universe, the Tholians also utilized tricobalt warheads to open up an interphasic rift. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly")

In 2267, the USS Enterprise was "classified destroyed" by Eminian computers which registered a theoretical hit by a tricobalt satellite from neighboring Vendikar. (TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon") In 2268, Arne Darvin, having traveled back in time from the year 2373, planted a small tricobalt bomb in a tribble, which he hoped would explode near James T. Kirk, and kill him. The bomb was beamed into space by the USS Defiant where it exploded harmlessly, after being discovered by Benjamin Sisko and Jadzia Dax. (DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations")

During the 24th century, tricobalt was used as an explosive in Starfleet's tricobalt devices. (VOY: "Caretaker", "The Voyager Conspiracy") The Maquis also had access to tricobalt explosives. (DS9: "Blaze of Glory") In 2376, inhabitants of Kelemane's planet developed tricobalt based weaponry. (VOY: "Blink of an Eye")
