Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a novel written by French novelist Jules Verne in 1869.

This novel tells about the odyssey of Professor Aronnax and his fellows (Mr. Conseil and Ned Land), captured by Captain Nemo in his submarine (the Nautilus), and their forced travel under the seas, that included the discovering of Atlantis.

After Tom Paris's father read this novel to him, he became obsessed with stories about the ocean. He re-read this novel a self-claimed "20,000 times", and it fueled many childhood fantasies about sea travels, including a wish to join the Federation Naval Patrol. Tom's passion to make his fantasies real eventually led him to breaking direct command orders and a subsequent demotion to ensign. (VOY: "Thirty Days")

In an alternate timeline, Tom Paris referenced Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by referring to Annorax as "Captain Nemo", the antihero of the novel. (VOY: "Year of Hell, Part II")

The USS Nautilus in DS9: "Tears of the Prophets" was named for the submarine in this book. Annorax and N. Land were named for characters in this book and Rura Penthe was named for a prison camp in this book. Furthermore, a monitor on the Regula I science station was labeled "20000 LGS" in reference to the title of the novel.
