This inference is also confirmed by the Star Trek Encyclopedia, which also states that the Excelsior-class ship was the Farragut.
It may be presumed that after the destruction of the newer Nebula Class Farrugut in 2373, that a shortage of available vessels brought about by the Dominion War pressed an older and decomissioned Farragut back into active service.
