See USS Hood for other vessels baring this name.

The USS Hood (NCC-1703) was a Template:ShipClass starship that was in service during the latter half of the 23rd century.

In 2267, the Hood underwent a layover at Starbase 11. The ship's number was seen on a chart indicating the repair status of several vessels. (TOS: "Court Martial")

In 2268, USS Hood participated in the unsuccessful M-5 battle simulation. The unshielded Hood was severely damaged when she was fired upon by the computer-controlled USS Enterprise using full-powered weapons. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

In an alternate timeline, the Hood was part of a Federation fleet sent to investigate Vulcan while it was being attacked by the Romulan mining vessel Narada. Upon arrival at Vulcan, the Hood, along with the rest of the fleet except for the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), were destroyed. (Star Trek)

The registry of the Hood was not confirmed until it was seen on the CGI model in the 2008 remastering of "The Ultimate Computer". Prior to that it had been seen without context on a list of starships in "Court Martial". The registry was first connected with the starship in the article The Case of Jonathan Doe Starship by Greg Jein and continued by the Star Trek Encyclopedia edited by future TOS remastered producer Michael Okuda.

According to the non-canonical Star Fleet Technical Manual the registry NCC-1703 was assigned to the USS Lexington.

In the non-canon novelization of DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations", the Hood is mentioned to be commanded by a Captain Dodge and to have transferred some officers to the Enterprise for additional training. Spock theorizes that Lieutenant "Brisko" may have transferred from the Hood.

USS Hood was named after HMS Hood, a British battle cruiser sunk by the German battleship Bismarck during World War II. HMS Hood was the second ship named after Samuel, 1st Viscount Hood, a Royal Navy flag officer and contemporary of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, who was prominent during the wars with France and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
