Tachyon detection network repositioned, disrupted

Display graphic depicting the Hornets position (2368).

The USS Hornet (NCC-45231) was a Federation starship in service during the late 24th century.

In 2368, the Hornet was part of the task force that blockaded the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. During the initial deployment of the tachyon detection grid, the Hornet was linked to the USS Ajax, USS Enterprise-D, USS Hood and USS Tian Nan Men.

During an attempt to lure the Romulans through the detection grid, Picard decided that the Excalibur should withdraw from the formation with fained engine troubles, forcing the Hornet and USS Akagi to be repositioned. In doing so, this would open up a small gap in the detection net for the Romulans to attempt to pass through. The ploy, however, failed when the Romulans disrupted the network near the Hornet forcing it, and the rest of the fleet to withdraw and regroup at Gamma Eridon. (TNG: "Redemption II")

In 2375, the Hornet put in for repairs at Deep Space 9 during the Dominion War. (DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges")

Appendices

Background

The ship's registry would appeared in the Okudagram depicting the tachyon detection network in "Redemption II." According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the class of this starship is Renaissance class.

This ship was named for the American aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8), which fought at the Battle of Midway. She was sunk in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. The then-under-construction USS Kearsarge was renamed USS Hornet (CV-12). Furthermore, the latter Hornet was the ship that recovered the crew of Apollo 11 on their return from the first manned lunar landing in 1969. In "Redemption II," it served alongside the USS Akagi, which was named for a Japanese carrier that also fought at Midway.

Apocrypha

According to the Star Fleet Technical Manual, there was a Constitution-class USS Hornet in service in the 23rd century, with the registry NCC-1714 (although the game supplement Federation Ship Recognition Manual gives its as registry NCC-1778). This would seem to be the same Hornet that was mentioned as a combatant in the novel "Dreadnought!".
