__NOTOC__

Revision as of 01:29, 30 May 2005

There have been two Federation starships known to bear the name USS Merrimack.

USS Merrimack (NCC-1715)

The first starship Merrimack was a starship in service during the 2270s. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Although not considered as canon, Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual lists the Merrimack as a Constitution class starship.

USS Merrimack (NCC-61827)

The second USS Merrimack was a Nebula-class starship in service during mid-24th century. Commander Rudman was an officer serving aboard the Merrimack in 2369. (TNG: "Birthright, Part I")

In 2366, the Merrimack was assigned to personnel transport duties; it ferried Ambassador Sarek and his entourage back to Vulcan after the successful conclusion of a treaty on Legara IV. (TNG: "Sarek")

It later served in Captain Picard's task force to blockade the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War in 2368. (TNG: "Redemption, Part II") Later that year, the Merrimack transported Cadet Wesley Crusher back to Starfleet Academy on Earth. (TNG: "The Game")

Background Information

The name Merrimack has a confused history in the Star Trek universe for several reasons. First, several computer displays in the Enterprise-D conference room misspelled as Merrimac (without the K).

The second confusion is an historical inaccuracy. The United States frigate USS Merrimack was captured by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, who later rebuilt the ship as one of the first ironclad warships on Earth. The ship was then re-christened as CSS Virginia. The Virginia fought in Earth's first naval battle between ironclad warships against the Union warship USS Monitor. Therefore, it is erroneous to refer to the battle as between the Monitor and the Merrimack.

Confusing matters further, there was even another Civil War-era US warship named USS Merrimac (spelled without the K)!
