The USS Merrimac (NCC-61827) was a 24th century Federation Nebula-class starship operated by Starfleet. Commander Rudman was an officer serving aboard the Merrimac in 2369. (TNG: "Birthright, Part I")

History

In 2366, the Merrimac was assigned to personnel transport duties; it ferried Ambassador Sarek and his entourage back to Vulcan after the successful conclusion of a treaty on Legara IV. (TNG: "Sarek")

In 2367, the Merrimac was on special assigment with the Vulcan Science Academy. The ship was named on the chart "Starfleet Operations-Sectors 21166-23079" on the USS Enterprise-D bridge. (TNG: "Brothers" okudagram)

It later served in Captain Picard's task force to blockade the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War in 2368. It was positioned between the USS Ahwahnee, USS Hornet, USS Charleston, and USS Tian An Men. The location of the ship in the grid was labeled with the ship's name and registry. (TNG: "Redemption II" okudagram)

Later that year, the Merrimac transported Cadet Wesley Crusher back to Starfleet Academy on Earth. (TNG: "The Game")

In 2369, the Merrimac was on special assignment with the Vulcan Science Academy. The ship was named on the chart "Starfleet Operations-Sectors 21538-23079" in the Enterprise-D observation lounge. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part I" okudagram)

Later that year, the Merrimac was named on the chart "Sector Ipai Relay Log - Relay Message Flow 1293" in Relay Station 47 Ops. This ship, in transit, sent a message to Relay Station 452. (TNG: "Aquiel" production art)

Finally, that year, the Enterprise-D was supposed to rendezvous with the Merrimac, so a rendezvous schedule was transmitted to Commander Rudman. (TNG: "Birthright, Part I")

Appendices

Background information

The class and registry were derived from the chart in "Brothers".

Star Trek: Voyager's initial character bible for Chakotay suggests that he served on the USS Merrimac early in his career.

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, "this ship was named in honor of the first iron-clad warship, which fought for the Confederate Army against the warship Monitor in the American Civil War." By that time, however, the ship had been rechristened CSS Virginia.

In at least one remastered episode (citation needededit), the spelling of this ship was changed to Merrimack.
