An unidentified flying object is a colloquialism of the 20th century, which is commonly abbreviated as UFO. It refers to any airborne object that cannot be adequately explained, although most such objects were eventually explained. These craft are also sometimes referred to as flying saucers, a term that originated in the late 1940s at around the same time science fiction stories became hugely popular, these objects were allegedly spotted in huge numbers across the North American continent and later the rest of the planet.

In 2267, the USS Enterprise was inadvertently propelled backwards through time to the year 1969. In that year, the ship was an entirely unknown design. Its immense size and ability to climb rapidly through the atmosphere exceeded what was then state of the art.
