University of California, Berkeley was an institution of higher learning located on Earth, near San Francisco in Berkeley. It was the home of the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s.

In 2152, Enterprise NX-01 received an urgent message from Admiral Forrest, relayed through the Vulcan ship Nyran under Captain Tavek. With orders to act as if Captain Archer was still aboard, Commander Tucker pretended to be the Captain in order to receive the message: "Cal beat Stanford 7 to 3." (ENT: "The Seventh")

During a time-travel mission to 1986, James T. Kirk lyingly claimed to Dr. Gillian Taylor that Spock's aberrant behavior was result of his involvement with the Free Speech Movement and his overindulgence in "LDS". (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 78), this public research university was "recognized for having graduated numerous Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics." The university had several athletic teams, including the water polo team, which were known as the California Golden Bears ("Cal").
