Joseph Steven, a Hollywood character actor, who hails from Chicago and studied acting, advertising, and film at the University of Illinois, Urbana; and, Children’s Theatre Workshop with Roman Tymchyshyn. His first performance was in Man of La Mancha. The Chicago International Film Festival awarded him an honorable mention for Afterthoughts, a film short. In Hollywood, his look and craft land him character actor and ‘real guy’ roles such as the quirky next-door neighbor, detectives, butlers, stalkers, and other nut cases.
His roles have ranged from high-end art dealer to homeless, murderous cowboy to Hassid murder victim, and apocalypse-era sidekick to turn-of-the-century Lyonais (Josef speaks fluent French). He is known for bringing varying degrees of quirkiness to all his characters, with a full gamut of emotion. See
In his 10 year tenure, Joseph has appeared on the big, little, and web screens in: Star Trek (2009, with Eric Bana, File:JosephSteven Romulan 4.jpg), Wanda at Large (with Wanda Sykes), The District (opposite Ernest Borgnine), Pirates 2 (as Greenbeard, with Orlando Bloom), award-winning La Première (with James Earl Jones) and The Last Days of Toussaint L’Ouverture (both, as Frenchmen), K-Pax (with Kevin Spacey), Galaxy Quest (with Sigourney Weaver); plus several indies including Oblivious, The Fourth Horseman, Mariah Everyday Ordinarily, Anguish, Light Showers, Pawn, the web series Beverly Hills Salon, and 2011's Cup O’ Joe premiering at The 168 Project Film Festival, among others.
Photographers seem to enjoy having him model for comic or expressive shoots.
In his free time, he might be found swing dancing, coaching executives, or immersing himself in French culture. Little known fact: Joseph once owned an Illinois advertising agency, Admakers, ...then spent his sabbatical year in Paris, France where he worked with homeless, street kids and heroin addicts, but ended up staying six ...before moving to Los Angeles.
