Sol system, The Cage

The inner planets of the Sol system, including Venus

Venus (or Sol II) was the second planet in the Sol system orbiting the Sun every 224.7 Earth days at a distance of 0.72 AUs. The planet was named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The location of Sol was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. Sol was located near Alpha Centauri, Sirius, and Tau Ceti. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Being a planet of extreme environmental conditions, the Venusian surface temperature reaches 735 Kelvin at a mean atmospheric pressure of 95 bars.

Hugh Campbell wrote a story called "Venusian Chronicles" for the January 1953 issue of Incredible Tales magazine. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

Venus was seen on a map depicting the Sol system watched by Nomad. (TOS: "The Changeling")

In 2364, when the USS Enterprise-D crew was infected with polywater intoxication, an officer serving in the shuttlebay delivered an inappropriate limerick over the comm to other crewmembers. ("There was a young woman from Venus whose body was shaped like a...") Hearing this, Lieutenant Commander Data began to repeat the limerick, but was cut off by Captain Picard before completing it. (TNG: "The Naked Now")

In the 24th century, Venus had a number of terraforming stations on its surface. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")

In an alternate timeline, Miles O'Brien, while still in the 24th century, noted that the terraforming stations on Venus were gone, following the creation of an alternate timeline created when Benjamin Sisko, Jadzia Dax, and Julian Bashir disrupted history after transporting to the 21st century. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part I")

During his early career, Chakotay spent a couple of months on Venus to learn how to pilot a starship in atmospheric storms. (VOY: "Future's End, Part II")

Background Information

According to Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 36, Venus orbited a G-type main-sequence star in the Alpha Quadrant. On page 38, Venus was given the following specifications:

  • Diameter: 12,104 km
  • Distance from Sun: 108,200,000 km
  • Surface Temperature: 465 °C
  • Rotation Period: 243 days
  • Orbital Period: 224.7 days
  • Gravity: 0.9 standard
  • Moons: None
  • Orbital Facilities: Aphrodite Terraforming Station

On the chart United Federation of Planets I, Venus (Sol II) was listed as a member planet of the United Federation of Planets.

On page 27, Venus was an example of a Class-N planet. Class-N planets had an age of 3-10 billion years, had a diameter of 10,000 to 15,000 km, were located in the ecosphere of a star system, had a high surface temperature due to greenhouses gases and water was present as a vapor in the atmosphere, and the atmosphere was extremely dense with carbon dioxide and sulfides.

Apocrypha

In the Fifteenth UK Story Arc, set in the late 2260s, a research depot on Venus lent the USS Enterprise experimental repair robots.
