Washington, DC (District of Columbia) was the capital of the United States of America. The bordering states were Maryland and Virginia. (ENT: "Storm Front", "Storm Front, Part II")

This city was home to the Smithsonian Institution, whose collection included the first Human warp-ship Phoenix, which Captain Jean-Luc Picard visited several times. (Star Trek: First Contact)

In 1930, the federal government revealed the results of a survey to the public. According to the survey, there was an exodus of individuals from the The South to the cities. A journalist based in Washington wrote an article about this survey for a New York City newspaper, which was seen briefly on Spock's tricorder. (TOS: "The Cage")

In an alternate timeline in which Nazi Germany had invaded the United States, as of 1944 Washington, DC was controlled by German forces. Before the federal government evacuated the city, the president made a vow to persevere. After the city's occupation, the White House became the NAZI headquarters in the United States. When the American military launched its counteroffensive, two army divisions were reported by German observers as advancing from the south on a direct course towards Washington. (ENT: "Storm Front", "Storm Front, Part II")

In 1986, after unsuccessfully interrogating Pavel Chekov on board the U.S.S. Enterprise, a FBI agent conferred with a civilian representative of the A.E.C.. The civilian suggested that they contact people in Washington for help. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In 2371, on aboard the USS Voyager, a disoriented and frightened Fred Noonan, after taking crew members hostage, requested that Captain Kathryn Janeway get in touch with Washington so he could personally speak with J. Edgar Hoover. (VOY: "The 37's")

Background info

The city was named after George Washington, who was a military general in the American Revolution and first President of the United States. The district was a reference to Christopher Columbus, who was a Spanish explorer.
