Lieutenant General William Tecumseh Sherman was the a 19th century Human soldier who served in the United States Union Army, during the American Civil War. During the war, Sherman served under General Ulysses S. Grant, who appointed him as commander of the western front, which included such campaigns as his March to the Sea from Atlanta to Savannah in the summer of 1864.

Among the units under Sherman's command during his March, was the 102nd New York Infantry, commanded by Colonel Thaddius Riker.

William T. Riker noted Sherman and his March to the Sea, while revealing his family history to Q, Quinn, Kathryn Janeway and Tuvok in 2371. (VOY: "Death Wish")
