William Wellman, Jr. was born 20 January 1937 in Los Angeles, California. His father, director William A. Wellman, directed the first movie he starred in; he later starred in three more of his father’s movies. Wellman played a Bajoran officer in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Favor the Bold".

In 1958 he starred with Clarence Williams III in Pork Chop Hill. In 1963 he acted with Teri Garr in A Swingin’ Affair. Also in 1963 he starred with Star Trek actor DeForest Kelley in Gunfight at Comanche Creek. In 1970 he performed with George Takei in Which Way to the Front. Four years later, in 1974, he acted in the horror flick It’s Alive with Michael Ansara. In 1977 he acted in The Private Files of J. Edger Hoover with George D. Wallace. A year later, in 1978, he starred with Jane Wyatt in A Love Affair: The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story. In 1994 he starred with Andrew Robinson in The Puppet Masters.
